7 Reasons Why You Should Start Using Solar Energy

Tuesday, May 18th, 2010

Energy crisis one of our top problems the world is facing these days. One way we can solve the problem is through finding new ways of generating energy. Among all alternative energy sources, solar energy proves to be the most promising due to its great solar energy benefits.

The pollution we are experiencing today comes from fossil fuels that we’re burned in order to generate electricity and run our vehicles. With solar energy, we won’t have to compromise the health of environment in just to generate energy. Using solar power is a clean way to generate electricity. It does not produce harmful emissions that can pollute the environment.

One characteristic that makes a great alternative energy source is renewability. Like the wind, the sun is an unlimited source of energy, which means that it can provide energy for an unlimited amount of time. There’s no threat of it running out, unlike the current energy source we rely on which is fossil fuel.

There’s always a good source of sunlight almost everywhere here on earth, and that makes solar energy stand out among other alternative energy source. Anyone can use a solar energy system anywhere. There are no other pre-requisites for using a solar energy system other than a good sunlight during the day.

Most alternative energy sources out there focus mainly on generating electricity and nothing else. Solar energy is quite an exception. It can be used for applications like generate generating electricity, heating, and even cooking. Its application is diverse, so it’s not difficult to choose and application that would best suite your needs.

For years we’ve seen increase of homes that have adapted alternative energy systems. So far, solar energy accounts for the majority of alternative energy being generated. Solar energy is has been a popular choice of homeowners among various alternative sources because of its affordability. Solar energy systems are so far cheapest alternative energy system in the market today.

A device called solar panel is the device mainly used to generate electricity using sunlight. Home owners prefer solar energy systems over other alternative energy sources because they are light weight and compact making them easy and simple to install. Solar panels don’t require too much space and can be installed on rooftops. As long as there’s a good source of sunlight, it can generate electricity.

Generating energy from the sun doesn’t cost anything. And it’s no doubt the best reason start using solar power. You may have to spend some amount for equipments like solar panels, batteries, etc. but it’s just a small cost compared to the energy it can give for you.

Wind energy is the renewable resource that can be used to obtain electricity. Windmills are constructed to generate electricity for household purposes, industries and farms. Today the technology has grown so much that we can use wind generators to convert the wind energy into electric power. The excess electricity that is produced is stored in the battery for later use. Best results come for those who live in highly windy areas.

We can make our own wind turbines, which reduces the installation cost and as well as the power bills. Also, These plans are available to create your own wind generator with materials found online or at the hardware store. They include:

1. Wind Generator Hub

2. Turbine Blades

3. DC motor

4. Inverter

5. 8, 12, or 24 Volt Batteries

6. Necessary Wiring

First, we need to plan how to set up the entire generator with the tools. These tools are available in the market. This plan must include the sequence of steps that has to be carried out to make our own wind power generator. This will be the beginning of your wind turbine project, and the start of saving you tons of money every month.

We start the plan with how to build a wind generator. You have to cut the blade in equal shapes and size and place in the hub with equal space. You need to fix the motor where the wind power is converted into electrical energy. Once your wind generator is built you will need a set of batteries and a mechanism to control the battery charging process for your new system.

The next step is to build the wind towers. Simple pole towers can be easily constructed. They can be fixed firmly on the ground to withstand strong winds. The pole has to be fifteen feet high or more. When it comes to wind energy, the higher the better!

Since batteries are the heart of any renewable energy system, it is better to use rechargeable batteries instead of disposable ones. Using rechargeable batteries really saves lot of money instead of getting a new one each and every time.

Then an inverter is required to invert the DC current into AC current that can be effective used for household appliances.

A charge controller can also be used to prevent the batteries from over charging, saving the batteries from being destroyed.

Finally all the components have to be connected by wires to enable connectivity between the components. Click the link below for some great plans on creating your own wind energy generator.

Benefits Of Solar Energy For Your Home

Friday, May 14th, 2010

Everywhere we go, solar energy is always available, and it’s no doubt one of the richest energy sources here on earth. Sadly it’s only known application these days is solar drier for our laundries. There are three applications you can use to take advantage of the sun’s free energy and create a solar energy house.

The energy from the sun has been beneficial to such since ages. It has been very important in agriculture but since modernization began, our reliance to its energy has lessened. Instead, we focused more on fossil fuel to provide energy for daily living. But at present, it’s pretty obvious that fossil fuel isn’t reliable any longer. Petroleum products are becoming increasingly expensive due to its lack of supply and huge demand.

Because of the energy shortage we’ve been having, and not to mention the cost we have to pay to use conventional energy source, this is no doubt the best time to return to natural and reliable energy source that is solar energy.

Solar energy is one of the most promising energy sources available today, and the good thing about it, is it has a wide variety of application for our individual needs. Solar cookers, solar heaters, and solar panels are some of the systems you can use to meet the individual needs of your home. And the best thing about them is that they rely totally on free solar energy.

If you’re like most people who relies so much on natural gas, you should have realized how expensive it is. But since cooking is a necessity, we often simply bear it and how that the price will go down soon. Unfortunately, it’s unlikely to happen, but a solar cooker can provide a solution. A solar cooker will let you cook, broil, bake, and even roast using nothing else but the sun’s energy. It may seem like a sci-fi story, but it does work. And all it needs is a steady source of sunlight to work.

As much as possible, I want to keep my house warm and cozy all night. But with the soaring cost of electricity bill, it’s impossible to enjoy such luxury. But now you can enjoy the same benefits for free with a solar heater installed right into your home. A solar heater is installed right into your home, and it absorbs heat during the day, and slowly dispersing it throughout the night, keeping your home cozy and comfortable all for free.

A solar energy house isn’t complete without a solar panel. Generating electricity from the sun’s energy is no doubt the best way to benefit from solar energy. You can enjoy all your appliances without worrying about expensive fees on your monthly bill.

Often times, people get discouraged about installing solar energy systems due to its cost. It’s true that in its early years, installing an alternative energy system is quite costly. But because of the increasing demand and increased production, solar energy systems are becoming more and more affordable.

Renewable Energy And Wind Turbines, Solar Panels and Wave Turbines

Saturday, May 8th, 2010

As fossil fuel reserves are beginning to dry up we must look to other sources for our energy needs to support our lifestyles. The planet still has many fossil fuel reserves, but they won’t last forever. It is an obvious problem with our current energy system – yet nobody seems to be worrying about it too much!

Clean energy sources such as wind, solar and hydroelectric are becoming more and more popular and as their technology is improved they are also becoming cheaper and cheaper. The ultimate goal is to make them cheaper than fossil fuels so that we can wean ourselves off of fossil fuels.

There are other types of alternative energy which you may not have considered, however. One such energy source is wave energy, and people are beginning to become excited about how it is developing.

The energy in waves is very dense, so energy can be taken out of them with a relatively small power plant. Wave energy also doesn’t break like sun energy or wind energy may.

A country famous for its beaches and surfing, Australia, already has many of these wind generators powering its cities.

One off the coast of a city just south of Sydney is about 100 yards off the beach. It weighs about 500 tons but it can power about 500 homes and desalinate 2000 litres of sea water every day, about enough to supply those same homes.

It is very sturdy – built to survive most major storms. Because it can generate power all the time, it can generate about 500kW of power. It cost about 4.7M to build.

Wave energy is still fairly expensive, but many experts believe that as its technology develops it may have the best chance of any alternative energy to become less expensive than fossil fuels.

Watch this and learn about solar panels for your home. It’s easy and you can make your own. Cut your energy bill down to almost nothing using residential solar panels at this site.

How to Begin Building Solar Panels at Home

Sunday, May 2nd, 2010

You would be surprised at how easy and how much fun it is to build solar panels yourself. Thousands of people have already done this and more are learning the methods every day. The rising energy costs are making people more industrial than ever and DIY solar panels are just the beginning. You can build these panels with a lot of parts that are already lying around your house too.

The power of the sun is amazing. You can easily understand why the ancient Egyptians would worship the sun. But we have the opportunity to capture the power of the sun and turn it into clean and renewable energy that will last for generations. It really does make a lot of sense to at least start investing in solar power, because we know it will pay off in the long run. And now that we will be learning how to make solar panels ourselves it will not cost nearly as much either.

Knowing what materials you need in this project is very important. This will determine how much money this project is going to cost you besides your time. If you have a good local home improvement store you can find most of the parts you will need. Some lumber and glass will be crucial for building a structure of the solar panel to be in and to be protected from the elements.

The only part of your DIY solar panel that you should not buy at the local hardware store are the actual solar cells. Some stores will sell these but they are very expensive. Here is a tip. Just buy broken solar cells on ebay and then fix them with a soldering gun. This is a very easy fix that anyone can do. If you have already purchased a good solar panel building guide you will see exactly how to do this.

A big factor in putting together your first solar panel is to make sure that you have the solar cells connected in the right way so the electricity is all flowing in the same direction. This is also essential when making more than one solar panel and connecting them all together on your roof, but a good solar DIY guide will make this easy.

Before you even start to build your solar panel you should consider how much power you will be needing. Most people can start with a 75 watt solar panel and then scale up from there with other solar panels that are all connected. These are connected in the same way that solar cells are. You can generate enough electricity to power your entire home with solar power alone.

Some Of The Benefits Of Using Renewable Energy For Your Home

Friday, April 23rd, 2010

There are many benefits to creating a greener home. The most common change will come in the utility bills. By making small changes, you will get a smaller bill each month. It has never been easier to add solar or wind power to your house, replacing at least part of the power you currently use with clean energy. Consider a few of the benefits of using renewable energy for your home.

Most families use more energy than they think. The average living space for most people is powered using nonrenewable sources, like coal or oil. These fossil fuels are the dirtiest, creating pollution from extraction to consumption. The technology for clean coal is currently in development and oil refining is primarily unchanged. Switching over to renewable energy now makes it possible to stop the dependency on fossil fuels.

The main benefits come from the very nature of renewable energy. It can be used repeatedly and is then replaced. It does not contribute to climate change. There are no emissions which pollute the atmosphere. The cost is actually quite low once you consider the short and long term savings and effects.

Purchasing renewable energy alternatives can be quite expensive, but it has never been easier to get these systems. Many states, and the federal government, offer tax credits or tax rebates for homes which have added green technologies. Contact a government representative for more information.

There are many simple things to do to be more green. In the winter, turn the thermostat down and put on another sweater. Make sure the lights have all been turned out, especially if no one is in the room. Replace old bulbs with LED or fluorescent bulbs to reduce the costs of your utilities.

Take the extra steps to increase the energy output created by your own renewable source. It is pretty easy to do a green energy DIY project. It is possible for people with hardly any building experience to make a solar panel or wind turbine. You can find step by step instructions with a manual, pictures, or tutorial on the internet, in specialty books and magazines, and at the local home improvement store.

These are just some of the benefits of using renewable energy for your home. The obvious financial benefit comes with saving money on the utilities and by taking advantage of the tax breaks. You will also feel great, considering the implication that your contribution is helping to save the world from climate change. If the benefits are still not enough, just think of the influence you are having by educating your friends, family, and community. You might even be helping to save the world, a benefit that will make us all happy.

How To Build Solar Panels Yourself

Friday, April 23rd, 2010

Making your own solar powered panels gives you the potential to not only have cheaper power, but it can also end up being a strong and more weather resistant than commercially available manufactured panels you find. You being in control of your panel construction from the start to the end, it is within your control what the quality of your product it. It is not nearly as hard to build your own solar panel system as most people think.

If you put plenty of research and time into the project before you begin, this will guarantee your renewable energy system’s longevity and that you get your money’s worth out of this project.

There are many things to consider before you decide what type of panels to construct. One important thing to consider is what energy requirements are needed for the particular things needing powered. Obviously, if you are trying to power en entire home it will require many more panels than to power say some appliances or a single room of a home.

What type of material you will need to build your panels will not only depend on what you wish to power, but it will also change depending on how much time and money you want to spend. Broken solar cells are one thing you can use for materials. Pieces of solar cells, although cheap, will cause you to spend much more time to create each panel. It could take you multiple hours to create even just one panels from them. However, if you only have the time to put in it is a good option.

A difficult thing about using old cells (other than the extra time it takes), is that when more connections must be made from cell to wire it causes an increase in resistance, which will then cause an increase in the electric flow and create heat. If this is the only choice available to you, at least it is still an option for creating reliable panels.

Once you decide exactly what is needed to power you can easily find tutorials online on how to connect the wires to the solar cells and how to protect the cells from the environmental elements. Many easy to follow tutorials can be found or purchased if you just try.

Once you have found a good tutorial or video to use, you can then go and purchase your materials for the panels and then you only need to fine the extra time to do the work. You will be on your way to a cheaper more “green” source of power before you know it.

Why We Need To Use Green DIY Energy

Thursday, April 22nd, 2010

When people struggle financially, they always look for options to do it themselves, or DIY. With projects like these being so popular, it is so easy to find information and get started on a green DIY energy project. Anyone can learn to build wind turbines or solar panels to create a greener place for us all.

Are you still not convinced to try a project yourself? Consider the amount of energy consumed by a typical family in one day. It is more than you probably thought. Most of the energy we use is generated by nonrenewable energy. This energy is produced by the dirtiest of the fossil fuels, coal and oil. You may have heard about clean coal, but that technology is still in development and our oil is running low. These are the main reasons to look at DIY projects you can do.

Buying these technologies at a retail price can still be quite cost prohibitive. Now with do it yourself options, the same products can be produced at a fraction of the cost. A few solar panels or simple windmills can substantially reduce the utilities cost in a home, offsetting the heating or electricity used.

You can easily find information on do it yourself projects. Home improvement stores should have books to guide you through the project. They’ll also help you get the materials you need to complete the project. Specialty books and magazines for do it yourself projects and green living will often have step by step instructions or tutorials. Most of this information is readily available online. A step by step guide will lead you through the process, help you with finding the materials, and setting them up.

Look for guides which also have a section or bonus materials about tax credits and tax rebates. Adding green technologies to your home may qualify you for one or both of these programs. The easiest thing to do is probably to contact a representative in your state and at the federal government with any questions.

The benefits of making a greener home are numerous. Results will include decreases in energy bills and possibly eliminating them completely. By adding wind or solar power to the home, you will help to add to or get rid of the electricity and heat brought in by outside companies to power your home. Take advantage of these technologies available so we can get rid of our dependency on fossil fuels.

These green DIY energy projects are on the minds of those who share the concern for our environment. Fossil fuels are dwindling and rising in price. Using them is dirty throughout the entire process, from collection through production to their use by the consumer. Once these are gone, what if we have not already put green technologies in to place? These changes need to start soon, before it is too late.

Building Solar Panels for Dummies!

Wednesday, April 21st, 2010

The day has arrived when you have to think about how to build solar panels in your own home to save energy bills and therefore precious money and do your little bit for saving the environment.

The advantage of this experiment is to learn about something first-hand what one has only read about. This way you will know what it is for yourself. And your entire family can participate too! To begin, head out to the hardware department.

One does not need more than half square foot copper flashing sheet, an electrical food heater, one container with a large opening, one efficient micro-ammeter, salt, water, sand paper, shears to cut metal and finally two clip leads.

Now to start the experiment. Clean your hands thoroughly and wipe it dry completely. The copper sheeting has to be cut to the size of the diameter of the food heater. Now, wash the sheet with detergent in order to do away with any oil residue on it. With the sand paper, wipe the sheet dry.

Once this is complete, let the sheet cool off without inducing the cooling process. It will be seen that the sheet is getting smaller. Flaking of the chemical deposits will be seen at this point.

When 30 minutes are up, switch off electric stove and allow sheet to cool at its own pace. The sheet will shrink. You will see flaking happening now and once completely cooled, hold it under running water and flake off very gently. DO NOT brush hard or it might damage the SOLAR PANEL.

You will now need another sheet of copper around the same dimensions as the first. Fit them into the bottle without letting them touch each other. The side of the sheet facing up on the stove should face out into the bottle.

Create another copper piece of the same size and place them both inside the big container. Ensure that they do not touch. Remember to keep the side of the sheet facing up on the stove to face outward.

Mix hot tap water with a few table spoons of salt until completely dissolved. Pour the saltwater into the bottle taking care not to wet the clip leads. Pour rill about an inch of the copper sheets are above water. Your solar cell is ready!

Of course, do not think that it will light up a bulb or something like that. This unit generates only 50 micro amps at 0.25 volts. Ways to use this can be as a detector of light or light meter. To light up an entire home would require the manufacture of hundreds more of such batteries. That would come to a huge expense.
