Roll roofing and built-up roofing are the most common techniques used to cover flat roofs. Roll roofing is simply the asphalt products manufactured in the roll form. Roll roofing, sometimes referred to as rolled roofing, is less expensive than shingled roofing and takes less time to install.
Consider the following points while installing the roll roofs. Firstly, determine the length of your roof and accordingly cut a strip of sheet that is to be under laid. The height of this sheet should go up to 3 feet. Place it along the edges of the roof.
Another piece of the same measurement is now kept over the first one. This should overlap the previous laid piece by about two inches and should be fixed in place by nailing. This should go on till the time we reach the top. The same style is adopted for installing at other end also. A metal strip is also laid on the edges of the roof to rid the water from damaging the roof. This is known as drip edge and it is nailed every 6 inches.
Now take two strips of the roofing of the size of 18 inches and of the length of the roof. A spread of roofing cement is laid over the edges of the roof and then the sized strips are installed over it. These strips should fully cover the cement spread and should be nailed.
Bring the roll of rolled roofing onto the roof. Starting at the bottom, have one person hold the end of the roll at the edge of the roof. Roll out the rolled roofing material to cover the length of the roof horizontally.
Having laid the roll on the roof cut the extra part. Make sure you align it before nailing. Fix the sheet you just lay using the cement. This will add strength to the roof and the roofing material as well. Further nail it at the bottom and sides of the roof.
Having done, you now need to mark a line at 33 inches from the top of the first piece. Lay down another piece aligning the chalk line. Install this piece in a manner it overlaps with the first one by 3 inches. Secure it by cement and nails.
Lay a strip on the peak of the roof, centering the piece so no seam runs along the tip of the peak. Glue and nail down this piece along both sides and edges.

If your home is located in a hilly region or a remote area then you are bound to get troubled by unwanted creatures and animals. The animals such as monkeys, cats, opossums, raccoons, rats etc. climb up to the roof and create a mess. Sometimes, the damage becomes so intense that it calls for the replacement for the affected part of the roof. Hence, the homeowners residing in such areas must always be prepared for such uninvited guests.
In order to free your home spaces from such unwanted guests, you need to take certain preventive measures.
The attic space of the home is often occupied by the creatures such as bats and rats. Their movement becomes more intense during nighttime which wakes you up instantly from a sweet sleep. Before moving ahead to the roof, observe the attic space of the home architecture.
Inspect the attic space of the roof to investigate the presence of such creatures in the attic space. Remove the creatures from your attic space forcefully using certain repellant solutions. You can visit the local home improvement stores to inquire about the availability of such rodent-repelling solutions. If you do not find any animal or rodent inside the attic space then observe the area for the traits of their presence. For example, the bats or the rats leave their wastes in the area where the live. Consult a salesperson while buying the best quality of repellant.
If no animal inhabits the attic space then it is good news for you. Ground a ladder to climb up to the roof. Observe the trees and the structures around your roof that offer an easy entrance for the animals. Trim the length of the tree braches that are hovering over the roof surface. Use a standard saw to serve the required purpose.
Bring in a number if broken pieces of glass and cement them over the roof fence. Pant then upright so that they offer an obstacle to the unwanted guests.
Besides that, plant more bushes and shrubs around your home to keep away the animals.
In addition, you can position a human dummy on the roof to keep away birds and animals.

One needs to follow all the safety precautions while installing shingles on a sloped roof. To ensure the safety of the worker handling the job, all the preventive measures must be kept in mind.
Before positioning yourself on the roof, determine the area of the work that you would use as the work site. Install foot-stops every 7 feet across the work across the roof spread such that you don’t experience a free fall from the roof. The foot-stops would allow you to work more effectively over a particular segment of the roof. Moreover, you would not encounter any frustration due to repeated slipping of the feet.
Now, remove the shingles one by one with the help of a specialized tool. Most roofers employ a pry bar tool to uplift the shingles. The pry bar can be supported by a shingle axe tool to remove the shingles completely from the roof. Start off the campaign from the top of the roof and move down along the slope while uninstalling the roof shingles.
Sometimes, the foreign materials and the debris removed from the top portion of the roof accumulate at the foot-stops. Examine the foot-stops regularly during the project to avoid any irregularity. Remove the old layer of tar paper from the roof and throw it in a garbage container place on the ground.
The efficiency of the installation job depends on the strength of the roof foundation. You would not like to move ahead with the installation job with a unhealthy network of roof trusses and rafters. Examine the base of the roof architecture for such irregularities and get them fixed with immediate effects. Take suggestions from an expert regarding the same.
Take out the measuring tape from the tool kit and fetch straight lines using the mason line. Keep a roofer at your disposal during this phase of the project as a false move would spoil the development made in the project. Again, start installing the new layer of shingles from the top of the roof. Use long-galvanized roofing nails to secure the shingles to the roof. Nail down 3 shingles on each unit of shingle.
Various safety equipments or gears such as scaffoldings, roof brackets, tree-climbing gears etc. can be employed during the project.
Do not forget to take the suggestion of the expert after each step of the project.

As a matter of fact, nothing is immortal in this world and the same applies to the roofs as well. With time, the immunity of the roof towards the damage decreases. To rectify damaged roof, you need a roof contractor who can do the job for you.
First of all, prepare a list of the possible reputed contractors from yellow pages or by asking from your neighbors, friends and relatives. Do not consider money as the primary basis for selecting a contractor for repairing your roof. Consider the below mentioned information for choosing an appropriate roofing contractor for your roof.
Investigate whether the chosen contractor is working for a reputed organization or not. Reputed organizations are committed to provide their customers with the highest level of satisfaction. They work according to the guidelines specified by the government which are suitable and highly recommended for the long life of the roofs.
Next thing to consider is the experience of the contractor in the field of repairing. Experienced roofers can easily spot the problem and can repair them easily without creating any hassle for you. They can also provide you with vital information to keep your roof healthy for a long time and the available market products that can help you in repairing your roof in an emergency situation.
Settle the price of the whole repair work before starting the job. If this is not done in advance, he may charge you with a very high bill after the completion of the concerned job. A contractor from a reputed firm not only provides you with the repairing cost but also provides you the description and cost of each item used while repairing.
Another thing to take into account is the total time span for the completion of the job. This also has to be specified at the beginning of the project. Also, query him regarding a discount in case the project is not completed on time.
Taking your comfortable time into account, fix carefully the working time of the project. The working should be comfortable enough so that it does not spoil your sleep early in the morning or disturb you while watching a long awaited football match on TV.
Once you are satisfied with the answers of the contractor for the above mentioned questions then he is good contractor indisputably.

Long the pride of homeowners by virtue of its beauty, stability, and longevity, stone reached peak popularity as a roofing material around 1915. As early as 1906, though, manufacturers were already experimenting with man-made alternatives, such as asphalt shingles and asbestos-cement slates, that could be made lighter, cheaper, or easier to install. The search for the perfect slate substitute continues today.
Stone, in various forms, has been used for roofs for a long time. Initially, stone was not used in roofs as it was thought to be too heavy for the columns below to support. But as the time passed on, many advantageous features of stone roofing came up.
One of the most popular stone roofing materials is slate. We usually see the slate roofs in places where they are easily available. As the technology improvises, these are available in plenty of designs and colors.
Proper maintenance is required with every roof, stone roofs included. However as compared to other roofs, these demand for little maintenance. Also, one can add years to their tin roof with little but timely subsistence. Stone roofs are highly tough and can easily tolerate all extreme weather conditions. Stone roofing is extremely beautiful and adds uniqueness and elegance to roofing.
Based on the unpalatable truth that each comprises of its negative as well as positive points, stone roofs also possess the downsides as well. One of the biggest downsides of stone roofs is the cost. In order to give your house an awesome look with stone roofs overhead, you will need to invest in a heavily.
As we know that stones are quite heavy, therefore due to the weight of slate, extra support is sometimes needed. This further enhances the expense in building the roofs with stone as a roofing material.

Homeowners need to demolish their roof when they are fed up of the regular troubles that the roof is posing. The roof may be leaking or cracked, or might be too old to continue. In order to demolish the roof safely and precisely, homeowners should stick to basics as well as modern principles. Any kind of gaffe would be dangerous and fatal.
Now, it is the time for careful assessment of the structural design of your roof. If the construction of your roof is a bit tricky and the area is also too large then it is worth hiring an expert. Do not take any chances before ensuring that you are the eligible one out for the job. Shoulder the responsibility if and only if your roof is of standard design and the area is small in comparison to that of a typical shingled roof.
The importance of the safety tools can be measured with the fact that the risk of accident rises to a whooping 60% without them. So if you are going to exclude the safety kit from your plan, you are removing your luck too. Safety gloves and goggles are the most eligible contenders for the safety kit.
Now, built a scaffolding structure around the building whose roof you are going to demolish. Make sure your structure is sound enough to carry the weight of your tools and your body. Moreover, the scaffold should be strong enough to absorb any kind of shake when it is put to work.
Also, keep a dumpster handy on the ground to collect all the flotsam and jetsam of the roof during the demolition work.
Now, use a ladder to gain access to the roof. Use ropes from the safety toolkit to make yourself firm on the roof. With the help of a pry bar, start dismantling the upper layer of the shingles. Now, grab a crow bar and begin eliminating the layer under the shingles that consists of cedar shingles or plywood pieces.
Now with the help of a correct tool, remove all the parts of the roof structure in the correct order.
Clean your roof to remove the residual of the demolition job. Make sure that the half-rooted nails are wiped off the roof.

Most homeowners would have come across the usage of the roofing nails while modifying or repairing the segments of their roofs. Most of the roofing materials such as asphalt shingles, metal sheets, roof flashings, rubber roofs etc. avail the services of the roofing nails during the installation. Roofing nails are more reliable and durable than the adhesives available in the market. Besides that, the long galvanized roofing nails offer resistance to rust to a large extent.
Traditionally, the homeowners employ hand-held hammer to nail down roofing nails. However, a hand-held hammer may not be appropriate for a large roof area. In that case, purchase or rent a roofing nail gun. Depending on your project expenses, you can go for either an automatic one or a manual one. Keep the specified duration of the project in mind while renting or purchasing a nailing gun.
In case the nail bends or twists during hammering down, make way for immediate replacement of the faulty nail. The faulty nail could lead to easy water leaks later. In addition, the half-rooted nail always reduces the strength of the affected shingle unit. You may have to face some problems while removing the stuck roofing nail.
If you remove the faulty nails incorrectly, it could widen up the original hole created by the nail. Hence, the upcoming nail would fail to take the place of the faulty nail. Besides that, it could be a possibility that the concerned nail doesn’t move at all. In that case, you have to cut the roofing nails with the help of appropriate tools. Mostly, a reciprocating saw is utilized to cut the stuck roofing nails.
The cutting of the jammed nail is the last option that could be considered. Remove the dust and debris deposited around the affected nail such that no obstruction is produced in the free movement of the saw. Avoid the contact of the saw with the roof surface.
Decide the point of the roofing nails from where it needs to be cut. Place the blade of the reciprocating saw across the nail and start cutting it slowly. Pick up the speed gradually without altering the roof surface. Wear rubber gloves and safety goggles while cutting the roofing nail.
Use the grinder head on a rotary tool to grind the part of the nail rising above the roof surface.
Grind the nail slowly so that you don’t damage the roof surface.

All the households located in cold regions face the fury of the winters for most part of the year. Hence, the efficiency of the heating appliances such as electric furnaces, space heaters, electric heaters etc. plays an important role in maintaining the temperature of the home spaces. The roof cover plays a pivotal role in preventing the dissipation of expensive heat produced by the heating appliances. Therefore, examine the roof cover to determine whether you are losing heat through your roof or not.
Certain methods can be employed to detect any heat-loss through your roof. Also, an expert roofer can be consulted to intensify the efficiency of a particular technique.
The insulation of the roof plays a pivotal role in saving the costs of electricity for a particular month. To determine the dissipation of heat through your roof, compare the electric bill of the month in which you went for extra-insulation to that of the month in which no insulation was in place. If no difference is observed then you need to redo the insulation work of the roof.
The heat-loss through the roof can be easily evaluated during the snowfall. Climb up to the roof and observe the cover of snow occupying the area of your roof. If the pattern appears even throughout then your roof may not be responsible for the heat-loss. If however the pattern looks uneven then an irregularity is suspected. The bald patches on the roof amidst the snow cover occur due to a certain heat-loss through these spots on the roof.
Move to the gutters and roof edges to discover any accumulation of snow in these areas. The heat dissipating out of the home spaces would have melted down the snow and the water would have traveled towards the gutters and the roof edges. During night, the water would have frozen again to ice.
Protect the attic space of the roof against the heat by insulating the segment. Heat poses serious risks to the structural integrity of the roof attic space.
Consult a roofer to fix the issue of heat loss as soon as possible.
Go for a permanent solution rather than rendering a temporary fix to the concerned irregularity.

Often, roof is neglected when it comes to repair and maintenance of the home architecture. However, it is the most important part of the home. It provides us haven when it is cold, hot, rain etc. outside. The chief culprit for the roof damage is its constant exposure to the harsh weather conditions.
There are different reasons for the roof damage like weather conditions, aging, poor maintenance and many others. All these different factors are discussed below.
The primary reason for the roof damage is the poor maintenance of the roof. Without proper inspection, the roof gets ruined. Regular inspection would help treating the roof damages at an early stage.
Improper installation is also one of the reasons for the early decay of the roof. There should be no half measures while installing the roof. If the installation job calls for the services of an expert then avail the same.
As mentioned above, weather has an important role to play in the installation and the damage of the roof. Do not get your roof installed in humid and wet weather conditions as the moisture can enter into the roof structure and can spoil it slowly but steadily.
The shudder coming out of the air-conditioners installed on the roof, machines, railroads etc. is also responsible for diminishing the life of the roof. Sometimes, brutal nature is also responsible for shaking the integrity of your home and its roof. In the form of earthquake, typhoons etc, nature can shake the integrity of the home even from hundreds of miles away.
Flashing plays an important part in protecting the roof from moisture. If the mounting of the flashing is not up to the mark then it is not a good sign. Moisture can leak into the roof and decay it completely. So, it is very important to install flashing carefully and precisely.
Following the above mentioned would definitely work in the favor of the roof of your home.

Today, the roofing stores are flooded with a variety of roofing materials. The shingled roofs are usually preferred over the other varieties due to their high value-for-money. However, the metal roofs have come up as a strong alternative to the traditionally accepted asphalt shingles. The good thing about the metal roofs is that they call for lesser repairs as compared to the asphalt shingles.
Besides saving money, the metal roofs complement the energy-efficiency of a particular home or building by rendering proper insulation. The heating or cooling appliances such as air-conditioners, coolers, ceiling fans, heaters etc. are able to work more efficiently than before.
Remember that the variety of metal roofing materials purchased must be in agreement with the nature of your home architecture. Misapprehension on that front could prove costly for the structural integrity of your roof.
Avail the help of Internet and the yellow pages to gather some information about the local dealers or contractors. The reputation of a chosen company can be checked by reading the online reviews of the concerned company. Furthermore, you can take the help of your friends or relatives to derive the contacts of the nearby roofing stores or dealers that offer the desired variety of metal roofing materials.
Once you have listed out the best companies offering the metal roofing materials in your area, investigate about the production techniques of the company. For example, check whether the company’s production unit employs galvanized steel in preparing the metal roofing panels or not. Also, investigate about the paint-job utilized by the production unit of the concerned company. The commonly utilized varieties of metal roofing paints include the materials such as Polyester, Polyester Silicone and Polymer.
Furthermore, check whether the chosen metal roofing sheets abide by the Energy Star (R) guidelines or not.
Higher Energy Star (R) rating means that the concerned metal roofing system is highly energy-efficient.
Take the guidance of an expert if you feel lost at any instance of the project.
