Shades for recreational areas around a house are usually for backyards, especially where pools and patios are concerned. People put up different kinds of shades depending on whether the area is a shade or the side of the pool. Pools use things like cabanas, canopies and side-arm umbrellas. Patios use things like awnings, pergolas, and also some canopies.

Shades are an important component of recreational activity because they help shield the people from harmful ultraviolet rays. Sunlight is needed to some extent for production of vitamin D, but past a certain time limit or intensity it becomes harmful and increases the risk of skin cancers. Sun screen can help with some of these issues but demands extra effort and time.

Choosing the right cloth material for shades requires keeping note of two things. The first is that the cloth material should be good at stopping ultraviolet light – not all materials provide sufficient protection. The second is that the cloth material should either be pretreated in some way to stop microbial growth or be naturally resistant to microbes and fungi.

Some types of patio shades are given in this article below to show the reader the range of possibilities.

Patios and pools are shaded by canopies. A canopy is a structure constructed like a tent. Two components make up the tent-like structure of a canopy: a steel scaffolding and a section of canopy fabric that is covers it. It is useful to block out light coming from above so there is invariably a shade material roof. On the other hand, putting up fabric for the sides is not a requirement, as some people are worried more about circulation whereas others are worried more about privacy.

Awnings are found largely for use as patio shades. Residential awnings have seen a surge in inventive progress in last few years. One may obtain retractable and sensor-driven awnings that are responsive to remote control. There are several types of retractables. One is opened or closed with an unpowered crank. Another uses a lateral swing-open set-up which is pushed in or drawn out. Lastly the mechanized kinds automatically unfold at a push of a button.

Around the pool some people use pergolas. Pergolas are designed for a purpose other than stopping the sunlight. Instead of supporting fabric material, the wooden struts of a pergola raise up wood slats that stop only part of the sun. Miniature kinds of pergolas are also available. They are sometimes called arbors, and are simpler to set up but are not suitable for shading many people. Instead, they are guide posts for foot paths.

When summer rolls around, many homeowners curse the weather and seek solutions to cool down both the exterior and interior of the house. Installing an air conditioner is helpful, but is only one part of a systemic solution. Air conditioners are expensive to install, to run, and to maintain. Furthermore, they do not cut down on the amount of heat entering, but merely act as a heat pump in removing it from the house.

The more appropriate answer to the air conditioning problem is to put in outdoor shades as well as associated cooling accessories. Outdoor shades solve two problems that are not addressable by air conditioners. For one, they help create more living space outside, in the front and backyards or courtyards and patios. For another, if fitted in the right spots, they help decrease the heat and light that come in through windows and open doors. There are some other devices that can help cool the exterior.

One of these is the outdoor mister. It is essentially a pipe system that sprays a very fine mist over the area. An outdoor mister used properly can lower the ambient temperature of the exterior by more than 10 degrees, which is amplified and sustained by the use of shades. Often times, to increase the evaporative cooling effect of outdoor misters, one installs an outdoor misting fan also that blows over the affected area.

With respect to patio shades, there are three common types used by people in the patio.

An exterior patio canopy is essentially a large-version of a tent. There are two parts to the tent-like structure of a canopy: a sturdy scaffold and a section of canopy fabric that is covers it. It is important to block out sunlight coming from the top so there is always a shade material roof. However, putting up shade material for the walls is not vital, according to whether the canopy owner is more worried about privacy or more circulation in the canopy.

The majority of people have seen a patio awning. Awnings for personal use have advanced far beyond traditional fixed-frame and single fabric construction. Contemporary awnings retract automatically in strong winds, are motorized and remote controlled. There are several types of retractables. One is opened or closed with an unpowered mechanism. Another makes use of a swinging configuration which is slid in or drawn out. Lastly the motorized kinds automatically open at a push of a button.

A patio pergola is a somewhat simple wooden structure that is supported by four or more columns in a rectangular layout. Instead of holding up shade fabric, it holds wooden slats that supply partial shading and incomplete sunlight. Pergolas are found astride backyard decks and sometimes in gardens. An undersized variant of a pergola is known sometimes as an arbor. Arbors are used as entry ways to garden trails.

In the summer, the weather turns comfortable, many people will plan or hold social gatherings in the backyard, on a porch, or in the wonderful home garden. Having the event outside gives the party-goers a chance to experience the nice weather, but also allows the party-giver to take care of many more guests than is feasible inside the house.

However, even in the summer the weather sometimes turns bad by being too hot. To obviate problems such as heat stroke, planners can save their parties with the use of an outdoor misting fan. These devices will protect guests by keeping the local environment cool and moist.

The process of liquid evaporation requires a tiny bit of heat energy in the surrounding environment. This is known in atmospheric science as evaporative cooling. Humans sweat when it is hot so that when the sweat evaporates it cools down the body. Dogs pant and hang their tongues out because the tongue is a source of moisture and heat that benefits from evaporation. The outdoor misting fan does the same by increasing evaporation.

The effects of the outdoor misting fan can be amplified with the use of other kinds of garden shading products. Most shade products reduce heat by reflecting all the light away. But the mister actually absorbs energy using evaporative cooling. Together the two work together to really bring down ambient temperature. The following is a discussion of three kinds.

The first type of shade used with an outdoor misting fan is the canopy. The set-up a consumer usually encounters at a store is a large self-supporting steel scaffold covered by a voluminous section of shade material. It is useful to shade out sunlight coming from the top so there is consistently a shade material roof.

The outdoor misting fan can also be used with an awning. Most people have rested beneath an awning before positioned over the store-front or display glass of an establishment and bringing in valuable customers who were likely seeking shelter. Awnings for personal use have been refined greatly beyond classic immobile and one-piece fabric configuration.

The final shade type used with outdoor misting fans are pergolas. Most exterior shading is made to block out all sunlight. Pergolas are designed with another idea. Rather than stretching out fabric material, the columns of a pergola raise up wood beams that block only part of the sun.

Guaranteeing a return value on investment in your home is not easy. Many of the projects are very costly, with risks of overrunning budget limits. It is often better to start small, perhaps by renovating existing parts of the house, rather than plunging into a gigantic, consuming project. Rather than renewing or renovating existing parts of the home, another way to add value to the home is to add more structure to a home.

Structural addition is often very expensive because of the extensive modifications that take place for the existing building, as well as creation of new materials. It also demands a real investment in labor, whether for the homeowner and his or her friends, or for the contractors who are hired for the job. A smaller structure is more manageable.

A type of addition that many do not consider is an outdoor shade. These come in a range of complexities, from hanging bamboo shades on the outside of a window to retractable, electrically-driven window awnings. Depending on the complexity the cost can be driven very far down. Moreover, the outdoor shade enlarges the usable space of the house while remaining economically viable for the budget conscious homeowner.

Following are examples of different kinds of outdoor shades that are often used for upgrading the home.

An exterior canopy is very much like a tent with standing room. There are two parts to the tent-like structure of a canopy: a sturdy scaffold and a section of canopy fabric that is stretched over it. People find it useful to have at the very least the top of a canopy shielded with fabric. If the canopy owner proceeds with putting in fabric walls, the use of window flaps and large door flaps may help air circulate through the canopy.

An exterior awning can be regarded as as a fixed structure shade, the installation location often being atop a window or entrance. Unlike shop awnings, the ones for private residents are built for pleasure and relaxation of homeowners. The newest kind is the retractable unit. Both hand-powered retractables and electrically-driven retractables are available. The powered ones are run with motors, which are managed by remote. High-tech detectors auto-retract in the event of buffeting wind or intense rain.

Pergolas are a special sort of outside shade because they do not provide complete shading. They permit a bit of light. The design is fairly straightforward on paper but needs a fair amount hard work to set up. A number of posts are put into the floor which support a number of top slats. These overhead slats block out a bit but not all light. Miniature variants of pergolas are also available. They are sometimes termed arbors, and are less complicated to put together but cannot shade many people. Instead, they are guide posts for foot paths.

The adverse results of excessive exposure to the sun include heavy premature wrinkles, sunburnt skin, and skin-related diseases later in life. Excessive exposure can occur through using the home swimming pool, working in the backyard, or even just lounging on a patio. These mundane and common activities can potentially lead to skin damage from too much sun light.

Outdoor shade usage is one way to help shield against the damage induced by solar radiation. Among the outdoor shades, a relatively cheap but effective option is the umbrella. The width runs from 8 to 10 feet. Most people first see them around personal home pools. Even better is that contemporary manufacturers are providing a host of accessories which extend the usefulness of these umbrellas.

Most people are familiar with the pool umbrella configuration: a center pole holds up the ribs and shade fabric. The problem associated with this configuration is that the center pole gets in the way of everyone’s view. Luckily, modern designers have created a side-post version. An extra side-post “extension” sticks out from the main pole, and holds up the umbrella. This fixes the problem of the obstructed view, but also looks a lot more elegant.

The base of an outdoor shade umbrella needs to be heavy enough to withstand moderate to strong winds. It can also be made to match the outdoor decor of the surroundings. The traditional base is a plastic basin filled with something heavy like sand. A wrought iron base is a huge improvement in terms of accenting, as well as practical since it provides the necessary weight.

For those who think that umbrellas become extraneous at night, the introduction of umbrella lights should give them pause. These lights are installed into the ribs under the fabric. When turned on, they light up everything that was in the shaded area, thereby extending the utility of the space and the life of the party. Power comes from cord or battery.

Umbrellas should be retracted and placed into storage during off-seasons. The closed configuration can be shielded against further damage and dirt with a special cover. Covers are picked for both style and for their compatibility with existing decor.

Finally, one should consider installing a third-party motor device which can power the opening and retraction of umbrellas. A manual crank can do a good job but exposes the operator to some danger of jamming, as well as uses up a lot of time. Motorized umbrellas can be opened at a switch of the button.

But just because it’s summer doesn’t guarantee that the weather will be perfect. A little rain or thunderstorm can ruin weeks of planning. To prevent this from happening, homeowners and other party planners are considering adding canopies to their events. Canopies, and other outdoor shades, not only provide protection against weather, but also add a measure of privacy.

An outdoor shade canopy is very much like a large-version of a tent. The metal frame is weighed down by a heavy base so it doesn’t rock in the wind, and a strong piece of fabric is suspended on the frame. The fabric comes in both natural and synthetic selections of various colors. Little window flaps are nice features that allow the party guests to look outside if there are wall flaps. Air conditioning with a fan or natural flow of air will help keep good circulation.

For very small garden or outdoor events, sometimes a house-attached awning or freestanding awning is sufficient to shade the guests. But if the size exceeds ten or more people, it becomes very hard to fit them under an awning. Freestanding awnings solve part of the problem by providing a portable method of setting up a shade. Outdoor umbrellas are another possibility. But to really shade a lot of people at once, a canopy is probably the best option.

There are a few problems associated with getting an entire canopy. For one, it’s extremely expensive for a mid to high quality product. If the canopy is used only once or twice per season, the cost may not justify the benefit. For another, even if the canopy is taken down and folded up, it’s quite large and difficult to store. Homeowners and party planners should consider renting a canopy to get around all these problems.

A further problem is that consistent cleaning will be required to make sure the canopy remains presentable. Whether it’s in storage or whether it’s been used frequently, there will be dirt and other stains on the fabric. Cleaning is done with specialized solvents for both fabrics and synthetics. One can also use specific spray devices that are good for large areas like the massive fabrics of canopies. High efficiency cleaning can also be done by companies who take care of yard work and pool or outdoor supplies.

The traditional home awning is composed of a metal frame onto which a shade fabric is stretched for shading purposes. The metal frame may be fixed or retractable in some way. The position of the frame is either over a window or door, and occasionally can cover a front porch or patio. Fancier awnings at home may be remote controlled or automatically retractable in the event of rain.

Despite the conveniences offered, many homeowners are reluctant to install traditional awnings due to the costs. The structure itself is quite expensive, and the installation even more so given the complexity and size of the product. A very modest home awning can cost thousands of dollars. Worse still, the shade fabric will require regular cleaning as it’s a repository for microorganisms and dirt. This is complicated by the inaccessibility of the top of the fabric.

One final problem is that the homeowner might occasionally find that the fixed outdoor shades are not flexible enough if guests or family members don’t want to be anchored to a fixed awning. For example, a barbeque event may be held far from the house itself, but there’s no way to shade it with the awning because it has only finite reach.

Such problems are solved with the help of the simple yet highly effective freestanding awning. It’s also composed of a frame that holds the outdoor shade fabric, but instead of being stationary, it rests on a set of wheels which allows it to be pushed around. When it’s not needed, the shade frame may be pivoted and folded so it can be stored in the least amount of space.

Among all the outdoor shades, the freestanding awning may be the easiest to clean. This is due to it dual configuration construction. In one configuration, the shade is overhead doing its jobs shading some area from the sun. In the other configuration, the shade is be turned and pivoted so the fabric is vertical, much like how portable blackboards have a swinging center board that can be flipped. The type of cleaning agents used are the same for normal shade fabrics.

This type of outdoor shade is also much cheaper in comparison to traditional fixed shades for two reasons. The installation and use doesn’t need any special tools or skills. Regular awnings might need some hammering or drilling to get them set up. In addition, the production costs of such shades are low because the design is so simple. Homeowners are advised to consider a portable shade because of its low cost to benefit ratio.

Those of us living in the continental United States will experience at least a few days of hot, uncomfortable and humid summers. Only those lucky enough to live in Alaska, or in the sunny, mild state of Hawaii, are able to avoid the extreme swing in temperature.

For the duration of the most sweltering days, many will find it impossible to spend time on the patio or in the backyard for any appreciable time. Children may be in danger of heatstroke. Those seeking to exercise in the open air may find it hard to stay out for long. And people who have energetic and active pets can’t take the pets for much time.

Horticultural hobbyists may find that the intense rays of the sun kills off their beautiful flowers and plants. Although plants require light to grow, they will wilt when exposed to temperatures that are too high. Sometimes the wilting is just a short-term phenomenon as the plant bounces back during the evening when it gets cooler. Other times the wilting and damage is irreversible.

To avoid the damaging effects of these intense summer days, home owners should consider outdoor shade solutions for their home. There are roughly three kinds of possibilities to help shade the home. One, a fixed structure that is part of the house. Two, a portable shade that can be moved to desired locations. Three, an air-temperature regulating system such as an outdoor fan or an outdoor misting system. These three may be combined also to synergize their cooling effects.

Permanent structure outdoor shades encompass things like pergolas, arbors, gazebos and awnings. Awnings may be the most common but also most useful of these. Usually they are placed over a window or entrance. Both retractable and roll-out awnings exist. They have enough reach to cover large patios, and perhaps a small porch in addition to some of the garden and yard areas. Modern awnings can be controlled with a remote, so a simple push of a button can open or close the shade. The only consideration here is the very high cost of installation and maintenance.

For those who cannot afford or cannot find time to set up the fixed outdoor shades, it’s possible to get a portable outdoor shade for a fraction of the price. The best example that everyone knows is the pool umbrella. Simple, no-frills umbrellas are cheap, but accessorized ones can command a much higher price. Two other portable outdoor shades are worth mentioning. For outdoor parties and events, a canopy tent can be easily set up and provides ample benefits to protecting participants at the events. Much smaller gatherings of people can be protected with the much simpler portable or freestanding awning.

Shading is only one aspect of keeping the outdoor or garden area cool. A temperature regulation system can work together with the outdoor shade to bring down the temperature of the surrounding area by ten degrees! The best cooling system is the outdoor misting set up. Pipes and sprays are combined to create fine, aerosolized droplets of water that aid in evaporative cooling of your home and garden. The magnitude of cooling can be amplified by using a high powered outdoor fan.

I became charmed with the drama of outdoor patio lights at an exceptionally romantic restaurant in the old part of Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. We sat in the courtyard garden surrounded by outdoor art sculptures while rope lights wandered up and down the trees. It was the first time I had recognized the beauty and impact of outdoor lighting and outdoor art. I was mesmerized. Since that initial night I have visited many other romantic restaurants and have admired their outdoor lighting and outdoor art but nothing makes an impact like the first night.

At my own house, I have tried to replicate the feel of bringing the indoors out which is what properly placed outdoor patio lights should do. I have met with moderate success and I love to experiment. In choosing your outdoor lights there are a number of things you should always consider. I have tried to list the 4 most important considerations below.

1. What is the purpose of the outdoor lighting? Is the lighting to be atmospheric or functional or both? A certain amount of bright lighting is necessary for general safety. This type of lighting would include lights at every door including your garage door. This lights need to be bright. Safety lights are a necessary evil of outdoor lighting. Other types of outdoor patio lights can be for effect and these lights don’t need to be bright and really shouldn’t be bright. Lighting for effect can be quite dim or use very small bulbs. This type of lighting should be experimented with.

2. Determine the placement of your outdoor lights. Be sure to highlight any outdoor sculptures you may have or a pond or a swimming pool. You can use rope lights to highlight distant objects. Often lovely and simple white Christmas lights make a nice year-round twinkly setting. The lights needed for safety should be by each door of your house at a minimum. It must be relatively easy to maintain safety lights. If the light requires a 20 foot ladder to change and you don’t have a 20 foot ladder then the light position should be changed.

3. Determine the type of light you want. These days cost and energy efficiency are important considerations in choosing a type of outdoor patio lights for your home. You could choose solar lights. Solar lighting is very popular and has been recently hyped. Solar lights require careful and cannot be counted on in cloudy or rainy areas. The most energy efficient and thus environmentally conscious is LED lights. These lights can be used as both safety lights and background effect lighting. The price of LED lighting is reasonable and these lights are often chosen.
